🗞️ Inside WordPress News
Here’s what I saw happening this past week:
- Mike McAlister shared an update of his Ollie theme that will add a wonderful onboarding functionality. I suspect he’ll launch when WordPress 6.3 launches, but man… that’s looking gorgeous 😍
Mike knows this, but I’m a big fan of what he’s doing with his Ollie theme. I’ve used Ollie for almost a dozen new themes and it’s just gloriously well suited for so many situations already.
- Here’s an interesting plugin I’ve not caught before. 10up launched something called Publisher Media Kit. Love it.
- Hendrik Luehrsen, you know, the man who wears lederhosen like it’s nobody else’s business, shared an update on where we are with FSE Themes in a Twitter thread. Good read to see what happened in the past 12 months.
🚀 Performance
- WordPress 6.3’s Field Guide was published and it’s just riddled with Performance Upgrades. So. Much. Love. for the WordPress Core Performance Team 😍
- The presence of SVGs in JavaScript bundles comes with a hefty performance and accessibility costs. There are several strategies on how to get the SVGs out of the bundle back to HTML, where it belongs. Here’s a good read on this.
- Caught this presentation by Scott Jehl on experimenting with performance optimization at the edge. You’ll learn a thing or two. Promise.
My favorite performance optimizing tools in WordPress:
- Best Front-end optimization plugin
- Cleaning up WordPress + script manager
- Cloud based performance optimizations
🔆 Inside WordPress Highlight
- Ronald Huereca shared a great tutorial on how to expand on the Command Palette being introduced in WordPress 6.3.
Some of my favorite WordPress tools:
- The most versatile and accessible form solution for WordPress
- LocalWP, the easiest to use local dev solution
💡 Interesting Finds
- Heather Burns shared this wonderful resource again. Where $this = a masterful paper on the legal, political, technical, and multilateral issues that surround them.
- Hidde de Vries (not related, and if you’re Dutch you understand how silly it is for me to even have to point this out 😆) shared a blog post about the impending WCAG 2.2 update. Highly suggest you start reading this as it’ll become mandatory in the very near future.
📖 What I am reading
Content strategy is one the pillars we’re growing our ScanFully app and as such, I was researching and updating my knowledge on all things SEO these past weeks. This is a deep dive into Topical Clusters that I appreciated a lot. Perhaps you do too?
🎁 Bonus
The 81st bonus is all about CSS and position: absolute.
That’s it for this week’s edition of Inside WordPress. Thanks for reading!
Best, Remkus
